Censor and censure
Censor = remove or suppress material considered objectionable.
Censure = criticize severely.
Example: The administration’s policy of censoring books has been censured by the media.
Hanged and hung
Hanged = the past-tense and past-participle form of the verb hang meaning to “execute.”
Example: The prisioner was hanged at dawn.
Hung = past-tense and past-participle form of the verb hang meaning “to fasten or suspend.”
Example: The stockings were hung by the chimney with care.
Imply and infer
Imply = to suggest or state indirectly.
Infer = draw a conclusion.
Example: John implied that he knew all about computers, but the interviewer inferred that John was inexperienced.
Lie and lay
Lie = intransitive verb meaning to recline or rest on a surface. Its forms are lie, lay, lain.
Lay = intransitive verb meaning to put or place. Its forms are lay, laid, laid.
Disinterested and uninterested
Disinterested = impartial, objective.
Uninterested = not interested.
Example: We sought the advice of a disinterested counselor to help us solve our problem.
